Kitchen Remodeling: Country Design

Posted on: July 3, 2012

When you hear “country kitchen,” do you think of the French Country, English Country, or American Country? While there are differences between the three, all share some common elements. In general, a country kitchen is modest and inviting.

Country Kitchen Layout

Ideally your kitchen will have a seating area. Although a table is more traditional, an island can be used for both seating and additional work space. Country kitchens utilize a lot of open storage like decorative shelving or open shelves with baskets. A drawer base with glass fronts can be used to display colorful dried beans or other décor, and wall cabinets with glass inserts can keep a kitchen feeling light and open. These options are also a great way to display collections – for all you knick-knack lovers, this kitchen style is perfect for you! Gather your collection and display it all together to make more of an impact.

Country Kitchen Cabinets

Cabinetry ranges from light, painted and glazed finishes to dark, rustic woods. A distressed or vintage finish can help you achieve a worn-yet-warm feel in your space. Traditional raised panel doors with simple moldings and details work well in country kitchens. French and English Country kitchens tend to have darker, larger pieces and accents, while American Country spaces feature more light to medium woods or painted finishes.

Country Kitchen Fabrics & Color Schemes

Fabric plays a big role in country kitchen remodeling. Small floral or animal-themed motifs are popular, as are plaids and checks. Window treatments should be simple and pretty. For example, a patterned sheer topped with straight panels that are tied-back and topped off with a shirred valance work well in a country kitchen. Chairs can be fully upholstered or just spruced up with a seat cushion.

The color of your kitchen should coordinate with the style. French Country uses combinations like blue and yellow or red and white. English Country can be a little softer, with neutral tone-on-tone combinations, or quiet greens and blues. In American Country kitchens, you’ll find cabinet accent pieces in black, antique white, brick red, sage green, and colonial blue.

Country Kitchen Floors

In country kitchen remodeling, floors are typically wide-plank wood, and mixing wood types and stains is more visually appealing than having everything in the same tone. A straight grid pattern provides a very formal look, while a pattern that uses different tile sizes is a little more casual.

Country Kitchen Countertops

In a perfect world, wood countertops are truly authentic but not a necessity. There are a wide range of granite and quartz choices available that complement a country kitchen design. For a bold look, bring your main color into the kitchen through the countertops. Black is a great neutral that will not compete with other colors, while browns will feel warm and comforting.

A country kitchen should look like it evolved and developed over time (even if you put it together all at once). Follow that concept and you’re on your way to your very own country kitchen!

“Although we have given this project a rating of 10 in all areas, we would like to give our thanks and appreciation to our designer Joel and installer Andrew (and crew) for the excellent job they did in remodeling our bath.  It was truly a pleasure working with them from beginning to end."
