Design Options for Your Kitchen Island

Posted on: July 18, 2016

Kitchen islands are a great way to create an open concept floor plan! With an open floor plan, you will find that your kitchen becomes a natural gathering place for family and friends. The first step in deciding which island design is right for your home is to consider how your island will be used in this space. Whether your intentions are to prepare meals at your island or to serve drinks at it, there is a style that fits your unique needs. To help make this process a smooth one, the team of kitchen remodeling experts at Bath, Kitchen and Tile Center have created this guide to help you choose the best options for your custom island.

Functional Design Options for Your Kitchen Island

With so many different types of kitchen islands, it can be difficult to make a selection. Here are some basic style options that will help you begin your selection process:

Open Shelves – Open shelving is a great idea for homeowners who enjoy decorating and keeping a tidy kitchen. This open shelving is often used to showcase dishes, fruit bowls, or any other aesthetically pleasing kitchen item.

Closed Drawers – If your kitchen is short on storage you may want an island that gives you extra drawers and cupboards. With an island that has closed drawers, you are easily able to tuck away the clutter!

No Shelves – Shelving isn’t a requirement for a kitchen island. If your kitchen has plenty of storage already, then you may want a kitchen island that is open and has plenty of space for stools.

Overhang – If your kitchen space allows for a countertop overhang then we highly recommend it! An overhang allows for barstools, which is a great way to add more seating to your kitchen. We recommend using at least 12 inches of countertop space for your overhang to allow for comfortable seating space.

At Bath, Kitchen and Tile Center, our team of professions will create a custom island that complements your unique space. A custom island will be a piece that not only stands out in your kitchen but will last for many years to come. Choosing a Countertop for Your Kitchen Island

There are many different countertop options for your kitchen island. In order to make your selection, you will need to consider the style of your kitchen and the purpose of your island. To get you started, here are a few of the most popular countertops for kitchen islands:

Quartz – This material is a great choice for homeowners who are looking for a durable surface. Quartz comes in many different colors and patterns and is resistant to stains and scratches.

Quartzite – This high quality stone will offer an elegant look to your kitchen with its neutral color tones. Quartzite is also a very durable material which allows you to place hot pots and pans on its surface without damage.

Butcher Block – Butcher block is a great cost effective option for your island that will add character to your kitchen. Butcher block is known for its classical appeal and durability. Stains can occur with butcher block; however, they can be treated.

Are you still unsure about which countertop option is right for your kitchen island? Then we invite you to take this short quiz to find out which material is the perfect fit for your home. Design Tips for Your Kitchen Island

Before customizing your kitchen island, you should also take into consideration these helpful tips!

  • A good place to hide the microwave is in the island. It doesn’t draw attention, and it becomes easy to load heavier items into the microwave from a lower height.
  • If space allows, a stand-alone kitchen island is a must (you should use a peninsula if space is limited).
  • For an open concept design, you should have seating on at least two sides of your island. Having seating on only one side makes for difficult conversations.

“Although we have given this project a rating of 10 in all areas, we would like to give our thanks and appreciation to our designer Joel and installer Andrew (and crew) for the excellent job they did in remodeling our bath.  It was truly a pleasure working with them from beginning to end."
