When was Bath, Kitchen and Tile Center founded?
Bath, Kitchen and Tile Center was founded by the Campbell family in 1963.
Why was a separate Harbeson location established?
One of our primary functions is providing cabinet, countertop, appliance, and installation services to Delaware home builders. Approximately 10 years ago a building boom started in the beach resort communities, and we needed a local showroom for our builders and their clients to make material selections and get local service. That was the main purpose of the new location. Once the doors opened, local home owners began coming in seeking products and remodeling services for their homes, and the location has since grown into a full-service remodeling center.
What’s your role?
I serve multiple roles for the company. I am the sales and project manager for the Harbeson location (Bath, Kitchen and Tile Center), and the Market Development Manager for Bath Kitchen and Tile Center as a whole with a focus on our website and internet marketing, the marketing of our new Newark, Delaware location, and the marketing of future new locations in new markets.
What kind of training did you receive?
I’ve been in the building materials business full-time since 1989. I started working for a lumber yard, then worked for a big box home center, then a small remodeler in Wilmington and have been with BKT for 10 years. The majority of my knowledge has come from on-the-job training by some very successful business men whom I have worked for over the years. I have received several industry recognized certifications over the years, including the designations of certifications from the National Association of Home Builders. Those certifications are “CGR” (Certified Graduate Remodeler), “CGP” (Certified Green Professional), and “CAPS” (Certified Aging in Place Specialist).
In addition, I am an EPA Certified Lead Renovator and BKT is a Lead Safe Certified Firm, meaning we have been trained and certified to perform work in pre-1978 built homes containing lead paint. I am also a Sussex County Director for the Home Builders Association of Delaware and a frequent editorial contributor to Qualified Remodeler Magazine and the website www.ForResidentialPros.com.
Where do most Bath, Kitchen and Tile Center clients live?
Our Harbeson location’s core remodeling clients come from Harbeson, Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach, and Georgetown, Delaware. Our three locations cover the entire state of Delaware, Southern New Jersey, the Maryland Eastern Shore, Northeastern Maryland, and Delaware/Chester counties in Pennsylvania.
Briefly describe Bath, Kitchen and Tile Center’s remodeling services.
The remodeling services of all our locations are complete turn-key remodeling of kitchens and baths. These services range from simple countertop replacements and simple vanity replacements to the complete remodeling of kitchens and bathrooms, including:
- All forms of ceramic, stone, and porcelain tile
- Bathroom fixtures
Our installation services include everything needed to complete a kitchen or bathroom remodeling project, from simple countertop installation to kitchen and bath demolition, cabinet installation, plumbing, electric, flooring, and paint. We will even replace windows and doors in kitchens and baths in conjunction with a project, and relocate walls and drywall. We specialize in beach and vacation home renovations that take place when homeowners are not present. In addition, our commercial division performs all types of commercial renovations including offices, restaurants, hospitals, doctor’s offices, and schools.
What are your favorite types of countertops and why?
I can’t say that I have a favorite; they all have pros and cons. Every type of countertop has its place in a project based on the client’s needs, wants, style, and budget. Bath, Kitchen and Tile Center offers them all, including Formica and Wilsonart Laminate, Corian and MEGANITE™ solid surface, Cambria, Zodiaq® and Silestone quartz, and all types of stone, including granite, marble, and soapstone.
What types of remodeling services do you typically do for beach houses?
We offer all of the same remodeling services for beach homes mentioned above. I think the key to our beach home remodeling service is that we manage the project from start to finish and a client with a rental or vacation home can entrust us completely with the care of their home while they are not there. Many of our beach home remodeling clients live in the Washington DC, Baltimore, MD, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey areas. We place real estate lock boxes on the homes to keep keys safe. Our clients either visit the projects on weekends, or go away and come back to a completed project. BKT carries the state required liability and workers’ compensation insurance. We are licensed both in the state as well as with each of the local municipalities we work in. Our sub-contractors are reputable businesses and we make sure we have their license and insurance info on file at all times. We take care of all the permitting and inspections required on the projects. And we provide written project schedules to our clients, which is very rare in the industry.
Bath, Kitchen and Tile Center is also a member of the Better Business Bureau and the Rehoboth Dewey Chamber of Commerce. We are also members of many trade organizations, including the NAHB, HBA-DE, and NKBA. We have several award-winning certified kitchen and bath designers on our staff as well as certified interior designers. We are literally a one-stop source for kitchen and bath remodeling needs.
What’s the difference between cabinet refacing and cabinet replacement?
Cabinet refacing (also called “face-lifting”) is the process by which the existing cabinets are kept in place. The doors and drawer fronts are stripped, and in some cases, the drawer boxes and hardware are also stripped. The existing cabinet boxes are wrapped with new wood veneer, which can be completely changed to a new wood species and color. Then the doors, drawer fronts, hinges, drawer boxes, and hardware are all replaced with new parts. This process is perfect for the client who is happy with everything in their kitchen other than their cabinets and just want an economical update.
The process of replacing cabinets is when the entire kitchen cabinet is removed and replaced, which means removing countertops, appliances, fixtures, and in some cases, flooring. Replacement is the way to go if you are replacing your countertops and appliances too. It is definitely more cost-effective.
