Although mostly seen in older and historic homes, soapstone is making a comeback and can now be found in many modern homes. Soapstone countertops have a beautiful gray color and luxurious feel that complements any style!
Other countertop materials may be lower-maintenance, but soapstone offers many other benefits that make it appealing for not only countertops but also sinks, bathroom vanities, fireplace surrounds, and more. Soapstone countertops:
- Offer luxurious beauty that works well in any room
- Don’t stain easily
- Won’t be marred by hot pans, chemicals, wine, citrus, etc.
- Offer relatively easy maintenance (common household cleaners will suffice—no need to buy special sealants or products)
You also have a little flexibility with soapstone in terms of its appearance. You can leave it natural, opt for an aged look, or go for an oiled look. If you plan on leaving your soapstone countertops natural or untreated, they’ll remain lighter gray (although they may develop dark spots over time with spills). Aged soapstone is a favorite—aged soapstone countertops have a darker, charcoal-like look. Of course, soapstone will naturally develop a more weathered look over time as the patina is enhanced. If you want the shiny, oiled soapstone look, it will require a little more maintenance. Periodic coats of mineral oil or some other enhancer will need to be applied until the surface develops a permanent patina.
