Want to know how to avoid the most common design and remodel faux pas our teams at Bath, Kitchen & Tile Center come across? Here’s a quick list of some things to avoid, some things to keep in mind, and some things you should never let happen.
1. Rushing in Without an Appropriate Budget
This is new and it’s exciting—we understand! But a proper remodel takes a while lot of things in order to get done right. Namely those things are time, and money. Plan carefully and take the time to fully develop your ideas before getting started, and from there start building a reasonable budget. The easiest way to do this is by setting time goals, or by setting back fixed amounts leading up the the project, rather than trying to drop a lump sum all at once.
Also be sure to have some wiggle room! During a remodel hitting some sort of snag is very possible, and it may require more (or less!) than you planned for.
2. Spending in All the Wrong Places
When building your remodel project budget, pay close attention to where all of the money is going. Too many remodels have had to go by the wayside because the homeowner splurged on niche materials, or furniture items that were totally unnecessary. If you’re looking for the best places to focus, pay close attention to storage and, if we’re talking a kitchen remodel, your appliances. That hand-crafted wood flooring might look great, but it’s not worth it if you can’t afford to put a range and hood in the kitchen when you’re done!
3. Ignoring Functionality
As a central focal point always keep in mind the purpose of your room. Is this going to be a game room? Are we talking kitchens, or bathrooms? In any of these places you want the room to look great, sure, but you also want it to be able to serve its purpose. To this end we recommend seeking custom cabinets for additional, out of the way storage that doesn’t prevent your creativity or mess up the overall design of a space. Nothing ruins a nice fancy design faster than a stock chest of drawers or some cookie-cutter cabinets.
4. Botching the Lighting
Imagine the most beautiful kitchen you’ve ever seen. Got it? Now bust out all the light bulbs in all of the fixtures save for one. Looks horrible without proper lighting, right? Laying out your track lighting, task lighting, and any additional lights alongside the overall design will ensure you get a finished product that actually flows. Nothing breaks up a good design faster than bad lights.
5. Working with a Bad Remodeling Contractor
When choosing a contractor, design team, or a design-build crew that can do it all, you need to pay close attention to how effective they are. We encourage shopping around and getting a few consultations—get a feel for each team. Are they attentive, friendly, and interested in making this project work? Or are they aloof, slow to answer questions, or indifferent to your preferences. Remembers, this is your home and project. Find someone who clearly cares about that!
